EN iO Chicago has been teaching long-form improvisation in Chicago for over 40 years. The school's flagship curriculum is built around The Harold — the signature long-form structure developed by Del Close and Charna Halpern. This five-level program trains students from first principles through professional ensemble performance, and has inspired improv schools around the world. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on ensemble work, pattern recognition, and the development of a unique group voice.

EN The first level introduces the core agreements of improvisation: spontaneity, active listening, acceptance of offers, and mutual support. Students learn to trust their impulses and build simple two-person scenes from scratch.

Level 2: Character and Relationship Development

EN Students deepen their scene work by developing fully inhabited characters and exploring the relationships between them. Emotional truth and honest reactions become the engine of each scene, and students learn how to let a conflict escalate without losing the relationship at its core.

Level 3: The Harold Introduction

EN This level introduces The Harold itself — a structured long-form that begins with a group opening, moves through three interconnected scene groups, and weaves them into a unified whole through callbacks and thematic escalation. Students learn to recognize emerging patterns and connect disparate scenes through shared theme rather than shared plot.

The goal is not just technical proficiency but a distinctive artistic identity capable of sustaining a full evening of long-form work.
