Advanced Long-form Improv - Harold and Beyond

EN Prerequisites include completion of intermediate improv levels (at least Level 3–4 from a recognised training programme). The course emphasises developing a unique ensemble voice, personal style, and authentic self-expression. It is suitable for performers pursuing professional improv careers as well as advanced hobbyists. The curriculum draws on Chicago school traditions, in particular The Harold and its variants.

Week 1-2: The Harold - Structure and Foundation

EN Participants are introduced to the full Harold structure: a group opening, three scene-beats per storyline, and a closing that brings themes together. Students practise different opening types (monologue, organic, deconstruction), learn to weave between scenes without losing momentum, and begin identifying the thematic patterns that give the Harold its internal coherence.

EN Students explore how narrative drive is built inside long-form improv. Using the story-spine framework (Once upon a time… / And every day… / Until one day… / Because of that…) as a thinking tool, they practise shaping character arcs, sustaining cause-and-effect logic, and drawing on recognisable archetypal roles to make stories resonate with audiences.

RU Участники разбирают, как строится нарративная динамика внутри долгоформатного спектакля. Используя «позвоночник истории» (Однажды… / И каждый день… / Но вот однажды… / И поэтому…) как инструмент мышления, они учатся выстраивать дуги персонажей, удерживать причинно-следственную логику и опираться на архетипические роли, чтобы истории находили отклик у зрителей.

Week 5-6: Advanced Character Work and Physicality

EN The focus shifts to building fully embodied, psychologically coherent characters. Students work with physicality and movement as primary tools for character definition, explore emotional truth rather than performed emotion, and practise playing clear, specific character objectives that create natural conflict and connection.

EN Having mastered the classic Harold, students experiment with its variants and with original long-form structures invented by the ensemble. They practise multi-threaded narratives, advanced game-to-scene transitions, and learn to design a form that serves their group's particular strengths and aesthetic.

RU Освоив классический Гарольд, участники переходят к его вариациям и к самостоятельно придуманным долгоформатным структурам. EN This module develops the "group mind" — the shared awareness that lets an ensemble move as one. Students practise holding multiple active storylines simultaneously, reading and supporting their partners without telegraphing, and using silence, stillness, and positioning as deliberate ensemble tools.

EN The final module is oriented toward performance. Students run full-length show rehearsals, work on audience connection and reading the room, and consolidate the ensemble identity developed throughout the course. The goal is a shared, recognisable voice that distinguishes the group on stage.

RU Заключительный модуль направлен на подготовку к выступлению. Участники проводят полные прогоны спектакля, работают над контактом со зрителем и чтением зала, закрепляют ансамблевую идентичность, выработанную за курс. Цель — общий, узнаваемый голос, отличающий группу на сцене.
