Yes, And...

The Core Principle

EN "Yes, And..." is the fundamental principle of improvisation: accept your partner's offer (Yes) and build upon it (And). It is not merely a technique but a philosophy of interaction on stage and in life. In "Truth in Comedy," Charna Halpern and Del Close name agreement the one unbreakable rule of improvisation. When an improviser accepts the reality created by their partner and adds new information to it, the scene moves forward. Denial kills the scene.

EN "The Improv Handbook" by Tom Salinsky and Deborah Frances-White (2008) explains the difference between "Yes, And..." and "Yes, but..." — the latter creates an illusion of agreement but actually blocks development. Genuine acceptance requires readiness to abandon one's own plans for the sake of a shared story.

RU The Improv Handbook

Blocking and Its Forms

EN Keith Johnstone in "Impro for Storytellers" (1999) introduces the concepts of offers and blocking. Any action or word on stage is an offer. Blocking is rejecting a partner's offer. Johnstone also highlights joining — passive agreement without contribution, which stalls the scene, though not as destructively as direct blocking.

EN Viola Spolin in "Improvisation for the Theater" (1963) approaches this through the concept of evaluation versus approval/disapproval: rather than judging the "correctness" of an offer, the improviser learns to work with what is there.

Practical Application

EN The "Yes, And" principle works on several levels:

EN At the level of lines: accepting a fact stated by a partner and adding something new. "Yes, we do have a wedding tomorrow, and I still haven't chosen a suit."

EN At the level of actions: if your partner starts washing dishes, you are in a world with a kitchen and dirty dishes — don't insist "we're in outer space."

EN At the level of emotions: if your partner is playing anxiety, accept that the situation is anxious before proposing a solution.

Common Mistakes

EN Wimping (Johnstone): accepting without adding anything — "Yes... alright... okay..." While technically not blocking, the scene stalls.

EN Overaccepting: treating every offer as a crisis. Johnstone advises accepting offers with the weight they were given.

EN Mistaking "Yes, And" for politeness: the principle does not mean the character always agrees. Characters may argue; however, the improviser accepts the reality of the scene.
