Spontaneity — Freeing the Inner Censor
What Is Spontaneity
EN Spontaneity is the ability to respond to a situation freely and immediately, without prior planning or self-censorship. It is arguably the most fundamental skill in improvisation and lies at the foundation of all others.
RU Кит Джонстон в Keith Johnstone. "Impro: Improvisation and the Theatre" (1979) описывает главное препятствие спонтанности — внутренний цензор (the inner censor).
EN Keith Johnstone in Keith Johnstone. "Impro: Improvisation and the Theatre" (1979) describes the main obstacle to spontaneity — the inner censor. The education system teaches us to filter our impulses, evaluating ideas before expressing them out loud. Improv requires the opposite: action first, evaluation later.
EN Schiller wrote of a 'watcher at the gates of the mind', who examines ideas too closely. He said that in the case of the creative mind 'the intellect has withdrawn its watcher from the gates, and the ideas rush in pell-mell, and only then does it review and inspect the multitude.' Improvisation aims to recreate this state — without the watcher — every time.
RU Виола Сполин в Viola Spolin. "Improvisation for the Theater" (1963)
EN Viola Spolin in Viola Spolin. "Improvisation for the Theater" (1963) views spontaneity not as chaotic freedom, but rather as a distinctive state of readiness for organic and unplanned creative responsiveness.
The Barrier and How to Overcome It
EN Johnstone describes how schooling systematically suppresses the imagination. A child scolded for an "incorrect" answer learns not to take risks. Most people leave school with less spontaneity than they had when they entered it. The improviser must reclaim the ability to be "wrong".
RU Tom Salinsky, Deborah Frances-White.
EN Tom Salinsky, Deborah Frances-White. "The Improv Handbook" (2008) develop this idea further: true spontaneity isn't about "saying the first thing that comes into your head" (which is often cliché), but rather being free enough to be obvious. Paradoxically, when we stop trying to be original, our responses become more personal and therefore more interesting.
The Physical Path
EN Spolin emphasizes the principle of physicalization over intellectualization: the body responds faster and more candidly than the mind. Many of her exercises begin with physical action in order to circumvent mental blocks.
EN Johnstone employs the technique of hypnagogic imagery: a state between sleep and wakefulness when the inner censor is diminished and images arise freely. He found that by learning to observe these images without immediately naming them — "holding the mind still like a hunter in a forest" — one can reclaim the richness of imagination suppressed by education.
The Key Paradox
EN The key paradox of spontaneity is that it cannot be commanded. "Be spontaneous!" presents a double bind. Therefore, the best exercises for fostering spontaneity work indirectly by diverting attention: give someone a complex task (juggling, counting, physical action), and spontaneous responses will start to emerge because the inner censor is preoccupied with something else.
