Armando
Long-Form Improvisation — From Harold to Armando
What Is Long-Form
EN Long-Form improvisation is a format in which a team creates a coherent performance lasting 30 minutes or more based on a single audience suggestion. Unlike short-form, where each game lasts just a few minutes, long-form allows for the development of characters, themes, and plotlines over an extended arc.
Harold — классика длинной формы / Harold — The Classic
EN In "Truth in Comedy" (1994), Halpern and Close describe Harold — the canonical structure of long-form, developed by Del Close in the late 1960s with San Francisco's The Committee and later refined at iO Chicago. The Harold structure: receive a suggestion → opening (a group exercise that extracts personal themes from the suggestion) → three unrelated scenes (Beat 1) → group game → three scenes develop further (Beat 2) → group game → scenes interweave and converge (Beat 3).
The opening is the foundation of the entire piece: everything introduced there is remembered and built upon. The suggestion is not what the Harold is about — it is only what the Harold is inspired by. Players personalise the suggestion, drawing on their own experiences, and the Harold is about the ideas extracted from it.
The key insight is that connections arise organically. Improvisers do not plan how the scenes will come together — they trust the process. A shared suggestion creates a thematic field, and by Beat 3, unexpected intersections emerge on their own.
Other Formats
EN
- Armando: A guest delivers a true personal monologue. Scenes inspired by the monologue follow. A new monologue begins a new cycle. The format cycles through monologues and scenes, with performers finding thematic connections as the piece develops.
- Montage: A series of short, loosely related scenes on one theme. No rigid structure — the ensemble feels the rhythm collectively.
- La Ronde: A chain of two-person scenes in which one character carries over from each scene into the next, linking the whole.
- Deconstruction: One long anchor scene is played, then its elements — characters, locations, lines, objects — are deconstructed and re-explored in a series of shorter scenes.
RU
Long-Form Skills
EN Long-form requires all improvisation skills, but especially: patience (not everything needs to be funny right now — scenes can be planted early and pay off later), memory (returning to details from earlier scenes to create the connections that produce the biggest laughs), trust (letting go of individual control and trusting the ensemble), and thematic thinking (seeing connections between seemingly unrelated scenes). As Halpern and Close write: making patterns and connections is far more important than making jokes.
