What Is Improvisation?
The core
EN Improvisation ("improv") is theatre created live, without a script. Performers invent the story, characters and dialogue in the moment, in front of an audience, usually starting from a single suggestion. Nothing is written in advance; everything is built right now, together. The thrill — for players and audience alike — is that what you are watching has never existed before and never will again.
What makes it different
EN In scripted theatre the words and plot are fixed in advance. In improv there is no text and no director calling the shots during the show — the actors are simultaneously writers, actors and directors, deciding the story as they live it. The "rehearsal" is the training of skills and instincts, not of a particular play: you practise how to respond, not what to say.
What holds it together
EN Because there is no script, improvisers rely on a few shared principles:
- "Yes, and…" — accept your partner's offer as true, then add to it. This is the engine of every scene. See acceptance and yes-and-acceptance.
- Listening — the next move lives in what your partner just did, not in your head. See listening.
- Status — the unspoken give-and-take of power that makes a scene feel real. See status.
- Justification — making each odd offer or accident "make sense" in the story. See justification.
- Failing safely — treating mistakes as gifts rather than disasters. See failure-and-the-fear.
Viola Spolin framed these as learnable skills; Keith Johnstone showed how blocking offers kills a scene while accepting them lets it grow.
What a scene looks like
EN Two players step out with only a one-word suggestion — say, "kitchen". One starts wiping a counter; the other enters and sighs. A relationship, a place and a mood appear out of nothing. They listen, accept each other's offers, let a small unusual thing become the game, and build it until the moment is full — then an edit ends it and a new scene begins. No one knew any of this a minute ago.
Common misconceptions
EN
- It is not stand-up. Improv is collaborative scene work, not one person telling prepared jokes.
- It is not always comedy. Much improv is funny, but narrative and dramatic improv aim for story and truth, not laughs. See types-of-improv.
- It is not random chaos. It only looks effortless; underneath are clear principles and a lot of listening.
- It is not only for "funny people." It is a learnable skill, and a supportive class is the normal way in. See improv-for-beginners.
RU
Why it matters
EN Improv began in the theatre but spread far beyond it. It is used to train actors, to make comedy (short-form games and long-form shows), and increasingly in education, business, therapy and personal growth — because the same skills (presence, listening, adapting, collaborating without a plan) are exactly what people need off-stage too. See applied-improv and improv-for-wellbeing.
Where it comes from
EN Modern improv grew from two roots: Viola Spolin's "Theater Games" in mid-century Chicago (which led to The Compass Players and Second City), and Keith Johnstone's work in 1960s–70s Britain and Canada (which produced Theatresports). It also has deep affinities with the Russian acting tradition of presence and truth. From these came today's short-form and long-form traditions. See history-of-improv, key-figures and russian-acting-tradition.
