A Short History of Improv

Roots: Viola Spolin

EN Modern improv begins with Viola Spolin in Chicago. Building on Neva Boyd's work with games, Spolin developed "Theater Games" — structured exercises that teach spontaneity and presence — and collected them in Improvisation for the Theater (1963). Her techniques became the training language of American improv.

Compass и Second City / The Compass and Second City

EN Spolin's son Paul Sills, with David Shepherd, founded The Compass Players in Chicago (1955–1958), improvising plays from a loose structure. Its alumni included Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Alan Alda — and Del Close. In 1959 several members founded Second City, which became the most influential comedy theatre in North America.

Harold / Del Close and the Harold

EN Del Close pushed improv toward longer, more theatrical forms. He developed the Harold — a long-form structure built on the principle of adaptation and reincorporation — and in 1981 co-founded ImprovOlympic (iO) in Chicago with Charna Halpern. Their book Truth in Comedy (1994) became the bible of long-form improv.

UCB и распространение / UCB and the spread

EN Students of Del Close — among them Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, Matt Walsh and Amy Poehler — founded the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB), bringing the Harold and long-form to New York and codifying it in the UCB Comedy Improvisation Manual. From Chicago and New York, this tradition spread worldwide.

The British branch: Keith Johnstone

EN In parallel, Keith Johnstone worked at London's Royal Court in the 1960s, toured Europe with his "Theatre Machine", then moved to Canada and founded the Loose Moose Theatre in Calgary. There he invented Theatresports — competitive, audience-driven improv — and wrote Impro (1979) and Impro for Storytellers (1999), the cornerstone texts on status, spontaneity and storytelling.

Other lineages

EN Improv also grew political and applied: in Brazil, Augusto Boal created the Theatre of the Oppressed, using improv games for social change (Games for Actors and Non-Actors). Today improv lives on stages worldwide and far beyond them — in classrooms, companies and clinics. See key-figures and types-of-improv.
