Audience Interaction — The Fourth Wall as a Door
Audience as Player
EN Viola Spolin in Improvisation for the Theater (1963) argues that the audience is "the most revered member of the theater" — without an audience there is no theater at all. She insists that actors must no more forget their audience than their lines or fellow players, and that the phrase "forget the audience" is precisely what created the fourth wall. When improvisers understand the audience as an organic part of the theatrical experience, the fourth wall disappears and the lonely looker-in becomes part of the game, welcome and included.
The Fourth Wall
EN Spolin describes the fourth wall as an artificial barrier that arises when actors are taught to ignore the audience. She argues that every technique an actor learns, every scene carefully coordinated, every curtain and flat on stage — all of it exists for the audience's enjoyment. The audience are guests, evaluators, and the final spoke in the wheel that makes performance meaningful. When student-actors begin to see audience members not as judges but as people sharing an experience, exhibitionism fades and a genuine sense of host responsibility replaces nervous tension.
Theatresports и форматы / Theatresports and Formats
EN Keith Johnstone in Impro for Storytellers (1999) built on these ideas with Theatresports — a format in which audience interaction is embedded into the show's structure. Viewers vote, supply suggestions, and judge outcomes; they become co-creators rather than passive spectators.
Types of Interaction
EN Getting a suggestion is the most basic level of audience interaction. A suggestion is a starting point, not a limitation — improvisers take the offered word and let it lead them toward fresh, tangential territory. Spolin's workshops built this skill progressively through Where/Who/What scene exercises, with several exercises explicitly designed as steps toward "developing on-the-spot scenes from suggestions by the audience" (Spolin, p. 5311).
EN Audience on stage — formats and exercises in which a volunteer from the audience becomes a character inside the scene. This tests improvisers' ability to include, support, and follow an untrained partner.
EN Audience voting — the audience's choices directly influence the direction of a scene or determine the outcome of a Theatresports match, giving the audience agency and making their presence felt as a dramatic force.
The Room's Energy
EN Experienced improvisers "read" the room — sensing its state, energy, and mood before and during a performance. The difference between a quiet Friday-night crowd and an aggressively energetic corporate audience can be enormous. Sensitivity to the room's energy leads to a more deliberate, responsive approach; the listening skills trained on stage expand to encompass the entire space.
