Играй сцену честно / Play the Scene Legitimately

EN Goldberg's fourth basic rule requires that performers be real — treating whatever they are doing on stage as genuine reality for that moment. This does not restrict what can be played: a character can be as bizarre or as extreme as the improviser wants. The key is that it must be believed within its own internal logic. If you become a toaster, behave as a toaster would in the given situation; the audience will believe it.

Good improv cannot be separated from good acting. Playing legitimately means that the scene is rooted in authentic behavior and honest commitment rather than in chasing easy laughs. Experience gives an improviser sensitivity to what an audience finds funny and awareness of their own strengths — but the goal is always truthful commitment, even when playing comedy. The framework of play-the-scene-legitimately is also what gives performers the license to try anything new: because the rules of reality are defined by the performers' conviction, not by external constraints like sets or costumes.

Это не ограничивает выбор материала: персонаж может быть сколь угодно абсурдным или крайним. Главное — чтобы в него верили в рамках его собственной внутренней логики. Хорошая импровизация неотделима от хорошей актёрской игры. Играть честно — значит строить сцену на подлинном поведении и искреннем принятии, а не гнаться за лёгким смехом. Опыт даёт импровизатору чутьё к тому, что смешит зрителей, и понимание собственных сильных сторон — но цель всегда остаётся одной: правдивая вовлечённость, даже в комедии. Именно этот принцип и даёт исполнителям свободу пробовать всё новое: ведь законы реальности задаются убеждённостью самих актёров, а не внешними ограничениями вроде декораций или костюмов.
