EN Goldberg is direct: the goal of improv comedy is to be funny — but NOT at the expense of the scene. Humor should come out of the situation and the characters, not in spite of them. A joke or piece of schtick that interrupts the flow of a scene can ultimately damage the whole piece, regardless of how big a laugh it earns in the moment. That laugh will be forgotten by the end if the scene as a whole falls apart from misdirection.

Jokes are fine — after all, you are performing comedy. But the joke must be organic to the situation rather than something funny inserted to get a laugh whether or not it fits. A scene made up of nothing but jokes probably has little substance. Goldberg's ideal: outrageously funny dialogue derived from well-drawn characters playing out a fascinating, thought-provoking situation.

He also addresses the common worry that some people "just don't think funny." The primary source of humor in improv comes from the situation, not from a performer's ability to construct jokes. Expressing the humor already present in a situation and making stand-alone jokes are two different things — and only the first is essential to successful improvisation.

Сцена, состоящая из одних шуток, скорее всего лишена содержания. Идеал Голдберга: безудержно смешной диалог, рождённый из ярко прописанных персонажей, которые разыгрывают захватывающую, провокационную ситуацию.

Голдберг также затрагивает распространённое опасение: мол, некоторые люди «просто не умеют думать смешно».
