Harold (Full Structure)
DescriptionОписание
EN The Harold is an advanced long-form improv format developed by Del Close and Charna Halpern at the ImprovOlympic. It weaves together an opening exercise, three rounds of scenes (each based on the Time Dash structure of three beats), and two group games, all inspired by a single theme suggested by the audience. The Harold is not about the theme — it is only inspired by it; the real material is what each player personally extracts from that suggestion.
How to Play
EN
- Get a suggestion. Ask the audience for a simple, mundane subject. Players personalise it — each draws on their own experiences and feelings related to the theme.
- Opening. The full team explores the theme through an opening exercise (Pattern Game, monologs, Rant, or another group format). This is the information-sharing phase; everything introduced here can return later.
- Round 1 — First beats (1A, 1B, 1C). Three separate scenes begin. In each scene, players establish a relationship and a situation — this is the first beat of a Time Dash. Scenes should start far apart from each other so their eventual connection is meaningful.
- Group Game 1. The full company plays a game that heightens the theme on levels not covered by the scenes. Any of the group exercises from the Harold repertoire can serve this purpose, or one may emerge organically from the theme.
- Round 2 — Second beats (2A, 2B, 2C). The three scenes return. The relationships change and develop — scenes may pick up exactly where they left off or jump forward in time. Players begin to notice connections forming between scenes without forcing them.
- Group Game 2. A second group game follows the second beats. Information from the games can feed back into scenes; everything can connect.
- Round 3 — Third beats (3A, 3B, 3C). The final round resolves the scenes. Not all scenes need to return — only those that still have somewhere to go. This is not the time for new information; it is time to wrap up and allow the scenes to reflect each other. On a good Harold, scenes may physically connect or converge.
- Ending. The ending emerges organically — it is not decided in advance. A scene may extend, a song may evolve, or the players may break out into monologs that call back to the opening.
RU
TipsСоветы
EN The Harold is composed of three basic elements: scenes (two to four players each), games (usually the full company), and solo monologs. The suggestion from the audience is the inspiration — the Harold itself is about the ideas the players extract from it, not the topic itself. Nothing is lost in a Harold: every bit of information shared in the opening is available to be recycled throughout. When patterns and connections are noticed and played, they generate energy far more powerful than any joke. Beginners often try to complete scenes in the first beat — experienced players know the scenes are going to return, so they establish the relationship and leave it unresolved.
