Television Exercise

DescriptionОписание

EN A director, a cameraman, and actors collaborate to stage a miniature television production. The cameraman follows the scene with a light source that acts as the camera's eye — the audience can only perceive what the light illuminates. The exercise trains actors to work within the constraints of a medium and to follow a director's vision.

How to Play

EN

  1. Form groups of four or more: one director, one cameraman, and the remaining players as actors.
  2. The director casts the actors and gives them a scene to perform. The scene should have a clear Where, be simple (it can be a fragment of a larger scene), and run no longer than three or four minutes.
  3. Set up a camera: a large theater spotlight on wheels, a photographer's floodlight on a long cord, or even a flashlight. The key requirement is that the light can be switched on and off. A microphone and earphones can be simulated with batteries and wires — these are not essential, but they add to the enjoyment of the exercise.
  4. Before filming, run a dry rehearsal without the camera: the director makes small adjustments, and the cameraman moves in and out to warm up.
  5. The camera lights up and they are on the air. The cameraman follows the action, moving in for close-ups and pulling back for long shots. The student audience can tell what shot is being taken only by where the light falls — the light is the camera's eye, the picture being taken.

RU

Reflection /

EN

  • Did the actors follow the director's instructions? Discuss this fully — every participant will eventually take a turn as director and come to understand why following direction matters in theater.
  • Did the cameraman choose the most interesting shots? First ask the cameraman, then the student audience. Where could the shots have been clearer or more interesting, and how?

RU

Sidecoach /

EN Before the exercise begins, a brief discussion of the basic camera shots — long shot, medium shot, close-up — is helpful.
