EN This exercise gives performers the experience of playing the Game of a scene from the point of the first unusual thing, without having to identify it on their own — the idea is similar to T-ball, where the ball is already on the tee. While two improvisers play a scene, the rest of the group watches for the moment something breaks from established reality, raises a hand, and names it.

How to PlayКак играть

1. Two improvisers take the stage.
2. Give them a one-word suggestion.
3. The improvisers begin a scene, working to clearly establish a reality with a Who, What, and Where.
4. They continue to Yes-And each other until the first unusual thing emerges.
5. The rest of the group watches carefully. Any watcher who thinks they have spotted the first unusual thing raises their hand — they are looking for something unusual or out of the ordinary given the reality that has been established.
6. Stop the scene when the first hand goes up. That person explains what they identified as the first unusual thing.
7. Discuss it as a group. It is fine to disagree — some people will see things that others miss.
8. Either have the improvisers resume the scene with the identified unusual thing in mind, or brainstorm potential Game moves as a group: throw out different moves that could spring from that first unusual thing.
9. Reset and run the exercise again with a new pair.

EN The exercise builds the skill of recognizing the first unusual thing. New improvisers often have so much to manage during a scene that spotting it gets lost; watching from the outside lets them focus on it exclusively. For those playing, the benefit is practicing the Game from the first unusual thing without having to find it themselves — like a basketball player drilling jump shots outside of game conditions.
