The Living Room

DescriptionОписание

EN The Living Room is a long-form structure in which the ensemble gathers in a horseshoe, as if at a dinner party, and takes turns telling true stories inspired by a single audience suggestion. When a story stirs inspiration, one or more players step into the center to play a scene drawn from the conversation. As the form builds, the conversations between players grow shorter and the scenes become more frequent.

How to Play

EN

  1. Get one suggestion from the audience as the launching point for the form.
  2. Players form a horseshoe facing the audience — think of it as a dinner party.
  3. Players take turns telling short true stories and anecdotes connected to the suggestion. Stories should be honest and grounded; players may play characters but must remain truthful.
  4. When a story or moment sparks inspiration, a player steps into the center of the horseshoe and begins an improvised scene. Other players join to support it.
  5. The scenes should not literally recreate the stories — use them as inspiration, exploring the themes, emotions, or images they evoke.
  6. After a scene ends, players return to the horseshoe and resume conversation. Incorporate what happened in the scene as new material; do not simply retell what the audience just watched.
  7. Alternate between conversation and scenes: the conversation fuels scenes, and scenes fuel new stories.
  8. As the form builds, let the conversations grow shorter and shorter while scenes come faster.

RU

Sidecoach /

EN

  • "Tell a true story, not a character's story."
  • "Step in when you're inspired — don't wait for permission."
  • "Don't retell the scene; use it as a springboard."
  • "Conversations should get shorter as the form builds."

RU

TipsСоветы

EN The key challenge is that scenes must be inspired by the stories, not literal recreations. Similarly, after a scene, players should use what they just played as fuel for new stories and directions — not summarise the action for the audience. The form works best when players listen deeply and allow the conversation to genuinely surprise them.
