Boris Game

DescriptionОписание

EN The Boris Game is an interrogation exercise in which a victim must connect an interrogator's rapid, disconnected questions into a coherent, self-incriminating story. A gigantic but entirely invisible character called Boris stands by to punish any answer the interrogator finds unsatisfactory. The charm of the game — and what lets the audience laugh unreservedly — is that the cruelty is self-inflicted: Boris exists only in the shared imagination of the two players.

How to Play

EN

  1. Assign roles: one player is the interrogator, one is the victim (the prisoner); a third plays Boris — an eight-foot-tall, terrifying thug who remains invisible to the audience.
  2. The interrogator opens politely: "Bring him in, Boris!" The victim hurls or frog-marches themselves onstage as if propelled by the unseen giant, then collapses into a chair.
  3. The interrogator begins courteously, asking completely disconnected questions one at a time (e.g., "Perhaps you can tell us where you were on Thursday the 16th?" … "And the broken accordion?").
  4. The victim must connect each new question to what has already been said, building a single coherent — and increasingly incriminating — story.
  5. If an answer is evasive, cancelling, or too "gaggy", the interrogator says: "Help him, Boris!" (or "Jog her memory, Boris!"). The player acting Boris then mimes twisting, hurling, or otherwise tormenting the victim — both players yell; howls of pain help ideas flow.
  6. At least once during the scene the interrogator says "Let's recapitulate," reviews what has been established, and tries to make sense of it all.
  7. At some point the interrogator produces a physical object (a handkerchief, a shoe, even an audience member) and says "Perhaps this will jog your memory!" The victim reacts with guilty recognition and weaves the object into the story.
  8. Force some sort of resolution — confession, arrest, or escape — then call in the next victim if desired.

RU

Sidecoach /

EN

  • "Help him, Boris!" — cue for Boris to act if the answer stalls.
  • "Let's recapitulate!" — prompt the interrogator to review and consolidate the story.
  • "Incriminate yourself!" — remind the victim that admitting guilt moves the story forward.
  • Keep the emphasis on story, not acrobatics; Boris gymnastics have little sustaining power.
  • Interrogators: reject answers that sidetrack or cancel what has already been established.

RU

Variations

EN Introduce the game as "advanced" to put students on their mettle and give them permission to fail. If both players keep looking in different directions for Boris, the interrogator can introduce Igor, Boris's ill-natured twin, to reset their shared spatial focus.
