Being Obvious
Being Obvious
DescriptionОписание
EN Johnstone argues that students block their imagination by fearing they will seem unoriginal, so they reject the first idea that flashes into their mind and search for something "clever" — arriving at something duller and less personal. This series of prompts trains students to accept the very first thought, word, or image that arises, without censoring it. The more obvious the improviser is, the more distinctly themselves they appear.
How to Play
EN
- The teacher asks a student: "Imagine a box — what's inside it?" The student must say the very first answer that flashed into their mind, not a "safe" substitute.
- Then: "Name some objects — keep going." If the student gets stuck, the teacher asks whether they are suppressing the word that keeps returning; they are told to say that word, and keep repeating it if necessary ("Pebble. Another pebble. A pebble with a hole in it…").
- Then: "Say a word." If the student hesitates and says one thing while their lips had started to form another, the teacher points this out and asks for the word that was forming first.
- One student mimes taking an object off a shelf and names it. If the teacher notices the hand had started to reach for one shape before changing to another, they ask what the first object was — and invite the student to take that one instead.
- After each prompt, the teacher names what happened: the student censored themselves because the first idea seemed too silly, too Freudian, or too ordinary. Johnstone emphasises that "fish" is always better than "fried mermaid" — the audience delights in the direct, obvious answer.
- The whole group can then be invited to improvise short scenes using the same principle: whatever response comes first, say it and go with it.
RU
Sidecoach /
EN
- "What was the very first thing that came to you?"
- "I saw your lips start to form a different word — say that one."
- "You don't need to be original. Say what your imagination actually gave you."
- "The audience loves the obvious answer. Trust it."
RU
Reflection /
EN Discuss what it felt like to say the first thought out loud. Which ideas did you reject, and why? Johnstone points out that striving after originality takes you away from your true self and makes work mediocre; the most individual response is paradoxically the most obvious one.
