Associative Scenes
Associative Scenes
DescriptionОписание
EN Also called Chain Smoking, this long-form structure links scenes through association rather than plot. Players take something from the previous scene — a line, a gesture, a sound, a prop, or a character — and use it to launch the next scene. The goal is to keep momentum building without relying on a continuous storyline.
How to Play
EN
- Gather 6–12 players. Get a single suggestion from the audience to start the form.
- Two or more players begin the first scene and develop it fully — resist the urge to cut too quickly.
- When a player sees a strong element in the scene (a word, phrase, gesture, location, or object), they use it to initiate the next scene. This is called a "snatch edit": the player physically enters and takes that element with them into a new scenario.
- Optionally, a player may "stretch" the snatched element — for example, a pen snatched from one scene becomes a pool cue or a sword in the next.
- Continue linking scenes this way. Look for unexpected connections rather than the most obvious one; the audience will appreciate the surprise.
- Take care to let each scene breathe and develop rather than rushing through a chain of quick one-liners.
RU

Teaching Tips /
EN The main danger of this form is cutting scenes too early and falling into a rapid associative run of shallow scenes from the start. Remind players that the point is to build momentum, not to produce as many scenes as possible. Also note that this structure can be used both as a rehearsal tool to practice associative thinking and as a full performance format.
