A-C A-C Patterns
A-C Patterns
DescriptionОписание
EN A-C Patterns is a UCB circle exercise that builds on the Patterns game by training players to skip the obvious word association (the "B") and jump instead to a thematic or conceptual connection (the "C"). The goal is to generate a variety of ideas and eventually land on a shared premise that can launch a long-form scene. It develops group mind and the ability to make thematic—rather than purely reactive—connections.
How to Play
EN
- Four to twelve players stand in a circle.
- One player says any word aloud — for example, "Duck."
- The next player resists the first direct association (e.g., "Goose") and instead asks themselves: what does "Goose" lead to? They then say that secondary idea — for example, "Christmas," "Migration," or "Aggression."
- Each subsequent player does the same: find the immediate association, then skip it and offer where that association leads.
- Once a thematic direction becomes clear, players can go on a short riff — building on the same idea for a few turns (e.g., "The One Percent" → "Diamond Champagne" → "Extravagant Proposal").
- After the riff, the group works to "close the loop" — gradually steering the pattern back to the original word or suggestion.
- In a long-form opener, repeat the loop two more times from the same starting word, arriving at three distinct premises by the end.
RU
Sidecoach /
EN
- "Skip the B — where does that word go?"
- "Find the theme, not the word."
- "Start your riff — stay on this idea for a few turns."
- "Close the loop — find your way back."
RU
Variations
EN
- Opener format: Use A-C Patterns as a formal long-form opener. Run the loop three times from the same starting word, arriving at three premises; ensemble players then initiate scenes from those premises.
- Skill-building only: Run a single loop with no performance framing — just focus on thematic thinking and closing the loop cleanly.
RU
Reflection /
EN
- What was the difference between a word association and a thematic connection? When did a clear theme emerge?
- Which premises felt most playable? What made them feel specific enough to build a scene from?
- How did "closing the loop" affect the sense of group mind?
RU
