Character — From Mask to Embodiment

Approaches to Character Creation

EN There are several schools of thought on character creation in improvisation, and they are not contradictory — they complement each other.

EN Through Status (Johnstone): Keith Johnstone argues that a character begins with status behavior. Choose how your character positions themselves relative to others (higher/lower), and the rest will emerge organically — voice, posture, attitude all follow from the status choice.

EN Through Physics (Chekhov): Mikhail Chekhov developed the technique of psychological gesture — a single expressive movement that embodies the essence of the character. Find the gesture and from it you can build the character's personality, emotion, and motivation.

EN Through Action (Spolin): Viola Spolin's Where/Who/What framework teaches that a character reveals themselves through what they do in a specific place. You don't need to "decide" who your character is beforehand — it emerges through interaction with space and partner.

Masks and Transformation

EN Johnstone dedicates an entire chapter, "Masks and Trance," to this topic. A mask, according to Johnstone, induces a trance-like state where the actor stops "playing" the character and starts being them. The physical presence of the mask takes responsibility off the performer: "this is not me, this is the mask" — and the inner censor recedes. Johnstone describes how even a piece of old sacking with eye-holes can possess tremendous vitality, while a beautiful decorative mask may be completely inert, because the power lies not in appearance but in the state it induces.

EN Chekhov describes an atmosphere technique — an invisible "field" that surrounds a character and influences everything around it. Working with atmosphere allows creating a character not from the outside in (costume, makeup, voice) but from the inside out (inner state → physical expression).

EN Salinsky and Frances-White emphasize that the key to a convincing character is commitment — total dedication to the choice. No matter how strange or absurd the character may seem, if the actor plays it with complete seriousness and consistency, the audience will believe.

EN Johnstone adds: a good character is not a collection of quirks (funny voice + weird walk) but a person with a point of view. How does this person see the world? What do they want? What are they afraid of? Status work answers these questions: the moment an actor chooses whether their character is trying to raise or lower their status relative to everyone in the scene, a coherent inner life appears.
