UCB Approach: Game of the Scene /

EN Will Hines in How to Be the Greatest Improviser on Earth (2015) systematises the UCB (Upright Citizens Brigade) approach to scene work. The central concept is the Game of the Scene: the unusual thing that makes a scene funny, which the performers find and then heighten through repetition and escalation.

RU Уилл Хайнс в книге «How to Be the Greatest Improviser on Earth» (2015) систематизирует подход школы UCB (Upright Citizens Brigade).

EN The game is not a pre-planned structure — it emerges from the scene itself. There is the real world and how things normally go (the scene), and then there is the weird, unexpected part that stands out (the game). For example: a boxing manager who tells fighters never to throw punches. The boxing match is the scene; the manager's absurd advice is the game.

EN The process of finding the game follows four steps:

  1. Establish the base reality — who, where, what is happening
  2. Notice the first unusual thing — a detail that stands out from what is expected
  3. Make a game move — heighten, repeat, or explore that unusual detail
  4. Heighten — each successive move raises the stakes further

Eight Principles /

EN Hines identifies eight personal qualities that great improvisers develop through practice. These are not rules for scenes but skills the real world tends to suppress: Be Present, Be Changeable, Fight Well, Be Brave, Play with Difficult People, Be Authentic, Be Funny, Be Healthy. They describe who you are on stage, not what you must do.

The Approach from Mick Napier: From the Inside Out / Напье: изнутри наружу

EN Mick Napier in Improvise: Scene from the Inside Out (2004) proposes a radically different starting point: forget all the rules and begin with a strong initiation. Do not wait for the scene to "come together" — make a bold choice in the very first second.

RU Мик Напье в книге «Improvise: Scene from the Inside Out» (2004) предлагает принципиально иную отправную точку: забудьте все правила и начните с сильного действия (strong initiation).

EN Napier critiques an over-reliance on rules: "Yes, and…" can become a trap if it turns into blind agreement. The real task is to be honest and specific. His key principles:

  • Don't be afraid — fear makes choices boring
  • Specificity — "I love you, Marina, especially when you eat soup" is stronger than "I love you"
  • Trust yourself — your first impulse is usually right
  • Initiate with a point of view — not "who am I?" but "how do I feel about what is happening?"

EN If This Is True, Then What Else Is True — logical expansion. Once you have found the unusual thing, ask what else follows from it. If a priest has become an atheist, he may have instructed his choir to sing R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion." What else might he do? Perhaps he has replaced the crucifixes with statues of Albert Einstein.

RU If This Is True, Then What Else Is True — логическое расширение.

EN Top of Your Intelligence — do not make your character dumber than they should be. Play your character as a smart person who knows as much as you would in that situation. When people feel pressure to be funny, they sometimes make their character arbitrarily stupid — resist this.

RU Top of Your Intelligence — не делайте своего персонажа глупее, чем он должен быть.

EN Gifts / Endowments / Pimps — three ways to give information in a scene. A gift is when you declare something new about your partner's character ("You look happy"). An endowment is when you essentially assign your partner a role ("You must be my father"). Gifts and endowments are good and often used interchangeably. A pimp goes too far and forces your partner to perform a stunt ("Weren't you going to read a poem? In Spanish?"). Gifts and endowments are helpful; pimps should be used sparingly.

Synthesis of Approaches /

EN The UCB school (Hines) provides an analytical framework: find the game, then heighten it. The Chicago school (Napier) provides emotional freedom: be honest, don't be afraid. The best improvisers combine both — emotional freedom on the inside, structural awareness on the outside.
