What Is Base Reality?
EN In UCB long-form improvisation, every scene has two parts. The first part is the base reality — the ordinary, believable world the performers build together at the opening of the scene. It answers the basic "who, what, and where": who the characters are, what they are doing, and where they are. The base reality is not meant to be funny; it is meant to be specific, honest, and real.
Why It Matters
EN The base reality exists so that something can break from it. Comedy in a long-form scene comes from the first unusual thing — the first moment that is strange, illogical, or surprising given the established context. Without a clear, grounded base reality you cannot recognise the first unusual thing when it appears, because you have no normal against which to measure it. UCB compares this to painting: "Blue doesn't show up well on blue." You need a white canvas (the base reality) for the unusual (the blue paint) to be visible.
How to Create One
EN The tool for building a base reality is Yes And: agree with everything your scene partner establishes and add new, related information. At the very start of a scene both performers know nothing about their characters, their activity, or their location. By Yes-And-ing each other's offers, they rapidly fill in the picture. The UCB manual advises making choices that are specific and personal — drawing on your own opinions and experiences makes the reality feel real and gets you to a first unusual thing faster.
Make choices about the present moment and the people in the scene. Avoid information about the past, the future, or absent characters. Keep the base reality section as efficient as possible: the goal is not to build the most elaborate world, but to build just enough of a world that the first unusual thing can be recognised. Once that unusual thing appears, the base reality phase is over.
Base Reality and the First Unusual Thing
EN The last line of the base reality phase is either one more Yes-And detail — or the first unusual thing that launches the Game. You cannot know in advance which it will be. This means that at the opening of an organic scene you should be simultaneously building the world and listening for the first signal that something has broken from it. The base reality is not abandoned once the Game begins; the environment and characters established there remain present throughout the scene and provide the "straight" context against which the Game's absurdity is funny. See game-of-the-scene and finding-the-game.
Common Pitfalls
EN New improvisers often make one of two mistakes in the base reality phase. The first is trying to be funny too early — forcing a joke or unusual behaviour before a real world has been established. This means the unusual thing has nothing normal to stand out against. The second mistake is talking only about the activity at hand rather than offering personal, specific information about the characters. UCB advises: in real life, people doing an activity (folding laundry, washing dishes) talk about something other than that activity. Scene work should mirror this.
