Intro to Harold
DescriptionОписание
EN The Harold is the long-form improv format at the heart of the ImprovOlympic tradition, developed by Del Close and Charna Halpern. A group of six or seven players takes a single audience suggestion, generates themes through an opening warm-up, builds three distinct scene threads, and weaves them together through recurring group games — aiming for a finale that unites the theme and all the material that has emerged.
How to Play
EN
- Six or seven players take the stage and solicit one thematic suggestion from the audience.
- The group plays an opening warm-up — such as the Pattern Game (word association) or another physical or vocal game — to explore their ideas and attitudes about the suggestion.
- From the material that surfaced in the warm-up, a first pair of players initiates a scene. A second pair cuts in with a new, unrelated scene; a third pair does the same. These three scenes may have little to do with the theme at this point.
- The ensemble plays a group game together — an activity that may look nothing like a conventional game but that connects or heightens the emerging themes.
- The three initial scenes return for a second beat; this time they may begin to touch the theme, or may not yet.
- A second group game follows, continuing to develop the shared material.
- The scenes return one final time, increasingly tying into each other and into the theme, culminating in a finale that incorporates as many threads as possible.
RU
TipsСоветы
EN The Harold's first rule, according to Del Close, is that there are no rules — the structure described above is a general pattern, not a rigid formula. The warm-up (opening) is not mere preparation: the material generated there becomes the soil for the scenes. Connections between scenes and the theme emerge naturally; there is no need to force them. As the book notes, making patterns is far more important than making jokes.
