Harold

DescriptionОписание

EN The Harold is a long-form improv structure created by Del Close, originally developed with San Francisco's The Committee in the late 1960s and later refined with Charna Halpern at ImprovOlympic in Chicago. It is composed of three basic elements — scenes (typically two to four players), group games (usually the full company), and monologues — built around a single suggestion from the audience. The Harold is not about the theme; it is only inspired by it. The goal is to let multiple apparently unrelated strands develop until their connections emerge organically.

How to Play

EN

  1. Get a suggestion. Ask the audience for a simple, mundane theme — an object, an issue, even a question. Take the first suggestion offered. Avoid obvious angles; try to raise the theme to a higher level.
  2. Opening. Play an opening game (Pattern Game, monologue series, Rant, or another form) to share personal associations with the theme and establish the group mind. This is the foundation — everything built later comes from information introduced here.
  3. Round One (1A, 1B, 1C). Three separate scenes, each played by two to four players, establish distinct relationships and situations. These are the first beats of three separate "Time Dashes." Scenes should start far apart from each other; do not complete them — they will return.
  4. Group Game 1. The full ensemble plays a game that heightens the theme on levels not addressed in the individual scenes. Games can be invented on the spot or drawn from workshop repertoire; three monologues can substitute for a game.
  5. Round Two (2A, 2B, 2C). Each scene returns. Time may have advanced dramatically or barely at all — there are no restrictions. Relationships are further developed. Without forcing it, players may notice scenes beginning to affect each other.
  6. Group Game 2. A second ensemble game, now able to draw on both the original theme and the material that has emerged in the scenes.
  7. Round Three (3A, 3B, 3C). The final beat. Not all three scenes need to return — only those that still have somewhere to go. This is the time to resolve, not to introduce new information. Scenes should reflect each other's ideas; if connections appear naturally, they can merge, but forcing scenes together that do not belong is worse than leaving them separate.

RU

Teaching Notes /

EN Six or seven players is the ideal team size, though Harolds have been performed with as few as five or as many as ten to twelve. The name "Harold" came from actor Bill Mathieu, who answered Del Close's request for a title with an arbitrary name — a minor annoyance for Del, who considered it far too silly for his life's work. Tim Kazurinski famously believed for years that the correct spelling was "Herald," thinking it referred to a heraldic proclamation. The form was developed by Del Close in the late 1960s with San Francisco's The Committee, and refined with Charna Halpern at the ImprovOlympic in Chicago.
