Using People You Know to Create Characters
Using People You Know to Create Characters
DescriptionОписание
EN Rather than inventing a character from thin air, this exercise asks improvisers to ground their choices in the physical mannerisms and behavior of a real person they actually know. The focus is on how that person moves, speaks, and carries themselves — not their biography — giving each performer a concrete, embodied starting point for the scene.
How to Play
EN
- Two improvisers take the stage.
- Each privately chooses a real person they know well — someone whose mannerisms and physical behavior they can recall clearly.
- Each improviser takes on the physical mannerisms of their chosen person: how they move, hold their body, speak. Use behavior as inspiration, not biographical detail.
- Before the scene begins, each improviser says a few lines of dialogue in character to the rest of the group, so that their character choices are on display before the scene starts.
- The improvisers then play a short scene together. The goal is character establishment — improvisers do not need to find the Game.
- Afterward, the group discusses: How did the character choices hold up? What details made each character distinct?
Extension (drawn from the adjacent UCB exercise "Using Status to Build a Character," p. 164–166): Someone in the group assigns one improviser high status and the other low status, and a one-word suggestion is given. The improvisers establish status in the first three lines; a watcher stops the scene after about a minute. The same pair then replays the scene with status reversed.
RU
Расширение (из соседнего упражнения UCB «Using Status to Build a Character», стр.

EN
- Biographical information from the real person's life should not complicate the scene. If the person inspiring the character is not a doctor in real life, that is irrelevant — the scene can still take place in a hospital.
- Stay in behavior: how they move, how they speak, how they react — not what job they have or what happened to them.
- One of the two specific characters can still function as a straight man in the scene, even though the improviser may be behaving very differently from his or her true self.
- Notice the distinction between assumed status in life and status in the scene. A boss can be low status; a butler can be high status. Status is always about behavior, not role.
RU
