The merry-go-round of images

DescriptionОписание

EN An Image Theatre technique from Theatre of the Oppressed in which four protagonists each sculpt a group image of a personal oppression, then rotate through one another's images attempting to break free from each one. Witnesses track each protagonist's behaviour across all four situations, and the whole group reflects together at the end.

How to Play

EN

  1. Four volunteers each choose a personal oppression they want to work on. Using the bodies of other participants as living material, each sculptor shapes a frozen group image representing that oppression — without explaining its meaning. When finished, the sculptor places themselves in the image as the oppressed protagonist.
  2. Each image is assigned at least one witness, whose role is to follow their protagonist silently through every stage and note what they observe.
  3. The group views each image and offers comments: not interpretations, but evocations — memories, associations, relationships or feelings the image brings to mind ("the multiple mirror of the gaze of others").
  4. At a signal from the director, all four protagonists simultaneously try to free themselves from the oppression they are in. The other people in each image respond with gestures and movements they feel naturally follow from the protagonist's actions, but they must never physically force or restrain the protagonist.
  5. The director then signals all protagonists to move on — each walks to the next image and takes the place of that image's protagonist. After a brief moment to feel the new situation, the director signals again and each protagonist tries to break free from this new, unfamiliar oppression. Repeat for a third and fourth image.
  6. Finally, all protagonists return to their own original image. Their witnesses share what they observed across all four situations: did the protagonist behave the same way in different contexts? Did anything change? Then the other participants in each image describe how the three visiting protagonists behaved there.
  7. The director gives a final signal and each protagonist has the right to one more attempt at their own image, now informed by everything they have experienced.

RU

Reflection /

EN After the exercise, open a discussion: did protagonists find different strategies in different images, or did they repeat the same pattern? What did witnesses notice that the protagonist could not see? What does the "merry-go-round" reveal about how we carry our habitual responses into new situations?
