The child's fear

DescriptionОписание

EN Half the group plays while the other half watches. Each player chooses something that frightened them as a child and embodies that fear as a concrete character — a person, animal, or tangible ghost — while simultaneously playing themselves in that state of childhood fear. Moving through the space, they engage in dialogues trying to frighten their partners just as they themselves were once frightened. By playing the subject of their own fear while reliving the fear itself, participants gain a deeper understanding of it. Then the halves swap.

How to Play

EN

  1. Half the group prepares to play; the other half watches. Each player thinks of something that frightened them as a child. The chosen character must be concrete — a person, an animal, a tangible ghost, and so on. Instead of a general fear like "fear of the dark," they should play the specific person or thing hidden in the darkness that they were afraid of. Even if the fear is "being struck by lightning," they should try to play the figure (perhaps God himself) who wanted to strike them — while at the same time embodying themselves as the frightened child.
  2. Players begin moving through the space, using only body, gesture, and facial expression to show the main characteristics of the fear they are embodying — without yet relating to one another.
  3. After a few minutes, the Joker asks everyone to find a partner. Pairs engage in dialogue, each maintaining their character and trying to frighten their partner, without saying anything that will obviously reveal who the character is.
  4. After another interval the Joker signals a change of partners; the same process continues. A third partner is then chosen in the same way.
  5. When the first half is done, the Joker reads out the names of the players one at a time. Both watchers and players describe what they saw in each person — not to name the fear, but to describe the behaviour and qualities they observed. Then the halves swap and the second half plays.

RU

Reflection /

EN After the exercise, ask participants: What did it feel like to inhabit the thing you feared? Did embodying it change your relationship to that fear? What did others see in you that you did not expect?
