Ritual Sound

EN Ritual Sound is a group exercise from Augusto Boal's Games for Actors and Non-Actors in which one group vocalises sounds they associate with a specific ritual — waking up, going to work, a classroom, a factory — while a second group responds with movements that in some way visualise those sounds. The sounds are not literal imitations but subjective expressions; the movements are not predetermined but arise freely from what each actor hears.

How to PlayКак играть

1. Divide the group into two roughly equal parts: a Sound Group and a Movement Group.
2. Choose a ritual familiar to the participants — waking up in the morning, the journey home, arriving at work, a classroom, the factory floor, and so on.
3. The Sound Group vocalises sounds they associate with that ritual. The sounds need not reproduce it literally; they should capture a subjective, felt quality of the ritual.
4. The Movement Group watches and listens, then moves in a way that corresponds to or visualises the sounds. The representation does not have to be literal — each actor moves as the sound inspires them, without self-censorship.
5. Let both groups develop and respond to each other until the exercise reaches a natural end or the facilitator calls a stop.

4. Двигательная группа слушает и двигается так, чтобы в той или иной мере «визуализировать» услышанное. Движения необязательно должны быть буквальными — каждый реагирует так, как его вдохновляет звук, без самоцензуры.
5. Обе группы продолжают взаимодействовать, пока упражнение не придёт к естественному завершению или ведущий не остановит его.

Hamlet variation: Some actors make sounds associated with a specific scene from a play they are rehearsing — not reproducing literal sounds (such as the clash of swords or breaking glass) but subjective, emotional sounds (which also carry feelings and, sometimes, ideologies). The other actors respond with whatever movements those sounds inspire, without self-censorship.

Вариация «Гамлета»: Часть актёров озвучивает конкретную сцену из репетируемого спектакля — не воспроизводя реальные звуки (звон клинков, разбитое стекло), а создавая субъективные, эмоциональные звуки (несущие чувства и порой — идеологию). Остальные актёры двигаются в ответ на эти звуки так, как те их вдохновляют, без самоцензуры.
