EN Inspired by the Living Newspaper format pioneered by The Compass Players in 1950s Chicago, this exercise has performers read real news stories aloud and then immediately satirize them through short improvised scenes or spoken-word bits. The goal is to expose the mechanics, biases, and absurdities lurking inside everyday news — much as contemporary shows like The Daily Show do.

1. Gather a group of performers and collect a handful of current news stories — from a newspaper, website, or app. Each player should have access to at least one story.
2. One performer reads a news item aloud to the group. Keep it brief: a headline plus two or three sentences is enough.
3. Without discussion, the group immediately launches into a short improvised scene or spoken-word commentary that satirizes the story — exaggerating its logic, exposing a hidden assumption, or playing out an absurd consequence.
4. Keep each satirical response tight: aim for a quick, punchy scene rather than a sprawling narrative.
5. After the scene ends, move to the next player, who reads a different story, and the cycle repeats.
6. Rotate through all the stories, then open a brief reflection: which satirical moments landed and why?
