The Harold

DescriptionОписание

EN The Harold is the foundational long-form improvisation structure, developed by Del Close and Charna Halpern at the ImprovOlympic in Chicago. It is built from three basic elements — scenes (two to four players), group games (involving the full company), and monologs — all growing from a single audience suggestion. Nothing is lost: every idea introduced in the opening is available for the scenes and games that follow.

How to Play

EN

  1. Suggestion — Ask the audience for a simple, mundane subject. Take the first suggestion offered; hesitating invites chaos. Remember: the Harold is not about the theme — it is only inspired by it.
  2. Opening — The team personalises the suggestion through monologs, a Pattern Game, a Rant, or an original format. This is the information-sharing phase: players discover each other's viewpoints and the group mind begins to form. Ideas must stay varied — out of chaos comes order.
  3. Round One (1A, 1B, 1C) — Three separate two-to-four-person scenes begin. Each is the first beat of a Time Dash: players establish a relationship. Scenes must start far apart from each other — like the legs of a teepee, if they are too close, the whole thing topples.
  4. First Group Game — A game involving the full ensemble heightens the theme on levels not yet covered by the scenes. Games may be invented on the spot or drawn from the workshop repertoire; even three monologs can serve in place of a game.
  5. Round Two (2A, 2B, 2C) — The same scenes return for their second beat. Relationships develop toward their potential; time may have jumped. Without forcing it, players may notice scenes beginning to affect one another — shared locations, parallel problems.
  6. Second Group Game — Another ensemble game. Information from the games can flow into the scenes and vice versa; everything can connect.
  7. Round Three (3A, 3B, 3C) — The final beat. Not all scenes need to return — if a scene has reached a natural conclusion, there is no need to revive it. Scenes resolve individually and reflect each other's ideas. On a good day, major connections emerge and a shared group statement appears.
  8. Ending — An organic ending grows from the moment: a final scene, an improvised song, monologs that loop back to the opening, or the scenes physically merging. The ending is never decided in advance — that is improvisation.

RU

Key Principles

EN

  • The Harold is not about the suggestion — it is only inspired by it.
  • Start scenes far apart: the farther apart they begin, the more impressive it is when they connect.
  • Harold is economical — nothing is lost; every idea from the opening is available throughout.
  • Do not force connections. They emerge naturally through the group mind.
  • The audience witnesses the birth of every idea from the start, so they feel "in on" the connections — and laugh more.
  • Out of chaos comes order: the more varied the opening ideas, the richer the material to draw from.

RU

Sidecoach /

EN

  • "Don't force it — let the connection come to you."
  • "Keep your scenes apart — give them room to travel."
  • "Remember the opening — it's all still in play."
  • "Relationships, not plot."

RU

Reflection /

EN

  • Where did the connections between scenes come from — did they feel forced or organic?
  • Which ideas from the opening made it into scenes or games? What was lost, and why?
  • How did the group mind develop across the three rounds?

RU
